Spokane, WA

Well, we left Montana, drove through the mountains in Idaho, and stopped at the KOA in Spokane Valley, WA. We have a train as a wake up system in the morning!

After relaxing and doing laundry, we drove into Spokane, which is the second largest town in Washington and the largest city between Seattle and Minneapolis. Spokane means "Children of the Sun" in the local native language, hosted the 1974 World's Fair, is the childhood home of Bing Crosby, and created "Bloomsday", the largest timed running race in the nation (7.5 mile run) and one of the largest timed running events in the world, and hosts "Hoopfest", the planet's largest three-on-three basketball tournament.

It's a large city, but very green, with a beautiful park town center, which was the place where the World's Fair was held many years ago. I loved the architecture and enjoyed walking around in this lovely city. Many of the building were attached to each other by elevated walkways which also was wonderful to see. In all, it's my kind of city which had no shortage of parking and is filled with comfortable little cafes, bars and restaurants. We tasted some of Spokane's white wine and home-brewed beer. Delicious!

Well, wir haben Montana verlassen, sind durch hohe Berge in Idaho gefahren, und haben in Spokane Valley, Washington, halt gemacht. Neben dem Campingplatz geht die Bahn vorbei und wir haben einen Zug, der unser Wecker ist am Morgen!

Erst haben wir uns ausgeruht und Waesche gewaschen musste auch mal wieder. Danach sind wir in die Stadt Spokane gefahren, die die zweitgroesste Stadt in Washington und die groesste Stadt zwischen Seattle und Minneapolis ist. In der einheimischen Sprache uebersetzt sich Spokane zu "Kinder der Sonne".

In 1977 hat man hier “Bloomsday” begonnen, was einer der meist besuchten Rennveranstaltungen in der Welt ist (12k).

Spokane ist eine grosse, aber auch sehr gruene Stadt, mit einem herrlichen Park in Stadtmitte. Wir hatten Spass, hier herumzulaufen und haben auch Spokane Weisswein und Spokane gebrautes Bier ausprobiert. Koestlich!

Viele der Gebaeude sind durch ueberdachte Bruecken miteinander verbunden, was sehr schoen und ungewoehnlich fuer uns war. Die kleinen gemuetlichen Cafes und Restaurants boten auch draussen sitzen an und die Architektur in dieser Stadt war ein Genuss. Es war meine Art von Stadt und ich bin begeistert davon.
