We visited the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame which is next to the AQHA Association building. The museum was fantastic (so was the architecture of the building) with lots of history on this fabulous American horse. Loved it and would have wanted to have my daughters see it also.
Afterwards we drove to Palo Duro Canyon. Palo Duro is Spanish for "hard wood" in reference to the Juniper trees common throughout the canyon. This Canyon is ca. 120 miles long and 600 to 800 feet deep and is the second largest canyon in the United States. It was formed less than 1 million years ago with rocks exposing a geologic story which began approx. 250 million years ago. Needless to say, pictures don't do this canyon justice and we were more than pleased that we didn't miss out visiting this place even though it's not quite as impressive as the Grand Canyon.
We made it through our storm last night, which left a lot of sand at our door, and after our day tour today we decided on a quiet 4th of July. Any kind of fireworks are banned around here for good reasons, i.e. we won't miss out on anything spectacular anyhow.
Don's parents are married 64 years today and will spend the day with family at a Vermont lake campsite. We will have a toast on them and also wish all of you a delightful 4th of July!

Wir besuchten das Amerikanische Quarter Horse Hall of Fame (Museum), was fantastisch war. Wir genossen nicht nur die Geschichte dieses wunderbaren Amerikanischen Pferdes, sondern auch die einmalige Architektur des Museums. Sehenswert! Wie gerne haette ich dies meinen Toechtern gezeigt.
Nach dem Museumaufenthalt fuhren wir zum Palo Duro Canyon. Palo Duro is Spanisch und uebersetzt sich auf 'hartes Holz', was sich anspielt auf die Juniperbaeume, die man ueberall in diesem Canyon findet. Ich finde zwar, dass sie mehr wie grosse Buesche aussehen.
Palo Duro ist ca. 193 km lang und 183 bis 244 Meter tief and dieser Canyon ist der zweitgroesste in den USA. Der Canyon formierte sich in weniger als 1 Millionen Jahren und die Steine zeigen eine geologische Geschichte, die ca. vor 250 Millionen Jahren begann. Einfach fantastisch, auch wenn nicht ganz so imponierend wie der Grand Canyon in Arizona.
Wir haben den Sturm gestern Nacht ueberstanden, auch wenn sich viel Sand vor unserer Tuer angesammelt hat. Fuer heute, den Amerikanischen Nationalfeiertag, nahmen wir uns vor, selber zu kochen und es uns einfach gemuetlich zu machen. Feuerwerke sind wegen der allgemeinen Trockenheit in dieser Gegend momentan verboten, so werden wir auch nichts verpassen.
Don's Eltern feiern heute ihren 64. Hochzeitstag mit Familie, an einem Vermont Campingplatz am See, wo eine Schwester ein Haus fuer eine Woche gemietet hat. Wir werden auf sie anstossen und wuenschen auch Euch allen einen erfreulichen 4. Juli!
