Mt. Rushmore is a spectacular sculpture and is also known as “The Shrine of Democracy”.
The work was designed by Gutzon Borglum over a time of fourteen years. When Borglum died, his son Lincoln completed the hair and some other details on the presidents before the project stopped all together in 1941. At the onset of WWII money and manpower were not available and thus the sculpture was abandoned and was never really finished. Well, you could have fooled me! It is definitely worth seeing in person.
We stopped in Keystone for lunch and at a place where they make Sioux pottery. Unfortunately, they commercialized their pottery which doesn't please me much. It's all poured ware, nothing is thrown, coiled or pinched, but the paintings on the pottery are done by Sioux Indians. Kind of difficult looking at the guys who were known as feroucious warriors repeating brush strokes on pottery pieces now.
In Rapid City one can find two pieces of the Berlin Wall and two roadblocks as memorials to also the US. And surprise, that is where I found out that Sioux Falls, SD, is the sister city of Potsdam/Berlin. We will be stopping in Sioux Falls two days from now. And here is another really cool thing in Rapid City. There is a sculpture of every president of the US standing on one of the street corners! Two weeks after a president leaves office, Rapid City will have a sclulpture of that president placed on one of their street corners. Incredible, isn’t it?!.
Mt. Rushmore ist eine spektakuläre Skulptur und ist auch als "The Shrine of Democracy" bekannt. Dieses Werk wurde von Gutzon Borglum über einen Zeitraum von 14 Jahren konzipiert. Als Borglum starb, uebernahm sein Sohn Lincoln die Endarbeit, wie die Haare und einige andere kleinere Dinge, bevor das Projekt endgueltig gestoppt wurde im Jahr 1941. Zu Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurden Geld und Arbeitskraefte knapp und damit wurde die Skulptur beendet und ist nie wirklich fertig geworden. Was auch immer, es war Wert, dieses Denkmal in Person sehen zu koennen.
Die Praesidenten an Mt. Rushmore sind George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt und Abraham Lincoln.
Washington diente als 1. Praesident der Vereinigten Staaten, 1789-1797. Jefferson verdoppelt die Größe der USA und war der 3. Präsident, 1801-1809. Lincoln, diente als 16. Präsident, von 1861 bis 1865, während des Bürgerkrieges und versicherte die Erhaltung der Union. Roosevelt war der 26. Präsident, von 1901 bis 1909 und trug dazu bei, die USA in eine Weltmacht und wirtschaftlich unabhaengig zu machen.
Zu Mittag hielten wir in Keystone an und machten auch Halt an einer Toepferei, wo Ware von den Sioux Indianern fabriziert und angeboten wurde. Leider ist die Ware nur auf Touristen spezialisiert, was mir nicht so gefiel. Alles ist Massproduktion, nur die Bilder werden von Sioux-Indianer einzeln bemahlt. Es ist etwas traurig, jungen Sioux Maennern beim Toepfereimahlen zuzuschauen, wenn man in Buechern immer von den kriegerischen und stolzen Sioux Indianern liesst. Na ja, die Zeiten haben sich geaendert.
Interessant war, das man in Rapid City zwei Stücke der Berliner Mauer und zwei Straßensperren finden kann. Und dort habe ich auch gelernt, dass Sioux Falls, SD, die Partnerstadt von Potsdam ist. Wir werden in Sioux Falls in zwei Tagen Aufenthalt machen. Und hier ist eine weitere wirklich tolle Sache in Rapid City. Man findet an jeder Strassenecke eine Skulptur von einem Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten. Zwei Wochen nachdem ein Präsidenten aus dem Amt scheidet, wird in Rapid City eine Skulptur von dem Praesidenten an einer Straßenecke aufgestellt. Einmalig!
