Tomorrow we plan on a visit to the famous Gateway Arch and a walk along the Mississippi river.
The Gateway Arch,the nation’s tallest man-made monument, is 630 feet high and has a tram ride to the top. St. Louis also has some interesting architecture, including Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian house and a skyscraper from Sullivan.
The weather here is unbelievable hot and I wonder why we left Florida this time of the year.
Well, it's tomorrow and we visited the Gateway Arch. Boy, there is a huge difference from seeing it afar or actually standing next or under it. I was definitely impressed!!! Underneath of the arch is the station for the tram that leads into the arch and there is also a museum of American history which impressed me as much as the arch did. Wow, you should see it! The presentation of the history couldn't have been done better and I could have spent days in there.
By the way, there is a little "gondola" one can sit in to find out if one can handle the four minute tram ride to the top of the arch. I am sending a picture and can tell you that there wouldn't have been a chance in this world that I could have made it four minutes in this little container with four more people in it. But, once again, the trip here was worth it and I take another unforgettable memory home with me.
By the way, the architect of the Arch is Eero Saarinen, son of an Architekt from Finland. He died in 1961, but left several beautiful and modern buildings in the US.
St. Louis ist eine Stadt mit zwei Haelften, mit dem Mississippi als Trennungslinie. Ein Teil gehoert zu Illinois, der andere Teil zu Missouri. Wir wohnen zur Zeit im Illinoisviertel, waren aber gestern bei einer Toepferei in Missouri einkaufen. Habe alles bekommen was ich brauchte, war aber nicht begeistert von der 8.5% Verkaufssteuer!
Morgen planen wir einen Besuch zum Gateway Bogen (Arch) und einen Spaziergang am Mississippi Fluss entlang. Die Gateway Arch ist mit einer Hoehe von fast 200 Metern das hoechste Monument in den USA. Es ist aus rostfreiem Stahl gebaut und man kann mit einer Bahn innen hochfahren. Leider ist das nichts fuer mich, da ich nicht "eingeschlossen" sein kann. Ich schicke ein Bild von der "Gondola", in der man zu fuenft in die Arch hochgeschickt wird.
Das Wetter ist wahnsinnig. Die Hitze ist kaum auszuhalten und kann mit Florida konkurrieren. Ich hoffe, dass es am Wasser ein wenig ertraeglicher ist.
Es war heute so heiss wie gestern, doch wir waren bei der Gateway Arch und ich war imponiert!!! Es ist doch anders wenn man darunter steht als es nur von der Ferne zu sehen. Meine Guete, diese Hoehe! Und darunter, unterirdisch, ist ein Museum der Amerikanischen Geschichte, das einfach einmalig ist. Man haette es nicht besser machen koennen und ich haette Tage darin verbleiben koennen. Das allein war die Reise nach St. Louis Wert!
Uebrigens, der Architekt der Gateway Arch war Eero Saarinen, Sohn eines finnischen Architekten, der diverse sehr schoene und moderne Bauten hinterlassen hat.
