1st stop Baton Rouge 6-30-2011

We made it to Baton Rouge after a bit of a delay. About an hour before we reached our destination one of the RV tires split and needed to be replaced. Luckily we had just stopped at a rest area and had plenty of room to do so, at 100 degrees and why do I say we. It was Don who had to do the work and I who felt sorry for him. No problem and we went on our way for another 20 minutes when a second tire blew out. This time we didn't have a spare. We made an emergency stop in a small town and were lucky to have both tires redone for a price that I am still stunned about. So much cheaper than what we would have had to pay in Florida. It shows again that every bad thing has something positive as well. We were told to keep the PSI pressure on the tires at 80 instead of 60 and who knows what the next miles will bring. I would say it couldn't get worth although we still have one tire that isn't new.

We made it to the KOA in Baton Rouge and took a swim in the pool. Nice start. After that we drove into Baton Rouge to walk around in the Spanish Town area and to find a restaurant on River Rd. That at least was my wish and intention until we made it into Baton Rouge which started reminding me of a small version of Washington DC. It has some nice architecture, but is pretty much dead after work hours. River Road is on the Mississippi River, but we couldn't find any restaurants on it. A disappointment although I am sure there have to be some areas that could have been memorable if we would have found them. Next time we'll drive through New Orleans. We, nevertheless, had a wonderful dinner with gator tale and Cajun fish at the Don's Fish Hut, not more than five minutes from our KOA.


Wir haben es geschafft, in Baton Rouge in Louisiana anzukommen. Es hat zwar laenger gedauert als erwartet, da einer unserer Reifen am RV eine Stunde vor Ankunft geplatzt ist. Zum Glueck hatten wir gerade halt gemacht und hatten Raum, um den Ersatzreifen aufzulegen. Und warum sage ich wir, es war Don der die Arbeit hatte und ich hatte Mitleid mit ihm, da wir ca. 40 Grad Hitze hatten. Aber wir haben es geschafft, bis eine halbe Stunde spaeter ein zweiter Reifen geplatzt ist. Wir mussten einen Nothalt in einem kleinen Ort machen, hatten aber Glueck, dass wir beide Reifen ersetzt bekommen haben. Und was fuer eine Freude war es als wir die Rechnung bekamen. Der Preis war wesentlich niedriger als was wir in Florida haetten zahlen muessen. So hat halt jedes Schlechtes auch gute Seiten.

Unsere RV Aufenthaltsstelle ist sehr schoen. Wir sind sofort schwimmen gegangen und haben uns schnell wieder erholt. Danach fuhren wir in die Innenstadt von Baton Rouge, wo ich hoffte, im Spanischen Viertel spazieren und dann am Mississippi River zum Essen gehen zu koennen. Na ja, wir haben gesucht und gesucht, doch Baton Rouge erinnerte mich an ein kleines Washington D.C. Nach Arbeitsschluss ist nichts in der Stadt los oder wir haben es nicht gefunden. Es hatte nette Architektur und es war sehr gruen und huebsch mit all den tropischen Pflanzen, doch wir haben kein Restaurant am Fluss gefunden und sind auch nicht zum Spazierengehen gekommen. Das naechste Mal fahren wir ueber New Orleans. Trotzdem haben wir ein nettes Restaurant gefunden, Don's Fish Hut, nicht mehr als fuenf Minuten entfernt von unserem Wohnort. Wir genossen Alligator und Cajun Fisch. Es war ein genuss!

Morgen geht es weiter nach Texas!

Yes, we will be on the road tomorrow morning. Everything is packed. The freezer is stocked and we didn't forget our wine and beer. Had a dr. appointment this afternoon to find out that they took the wrong blood test. Ah well, it can wait until we come back. But I sure miss our doctor, good funny Dr. Ohn Maung from Virginia.

Tomorrow night we should be having a fine cajun dinner in Baton Rouge.

getting ready 6-27-2011, a few days before our big trip

 My husband passed on his head cold which he had a hard time getting rid of. Luckily I started packing the RV a week ago and don't have to worry too much about my non functioning brain right now. I am sitting around, burning up and trumpeting like a moose, while learning how to operate this blog.

Today we'll do our grocery shopping and bring my Kiwi tree to Joanne's place. Hopefully it will get some water through her daily sprinkler system. Yes, it's hot in Florida, and I finally get why nobody is ever outside. Although the friends of a neighbor were swimming in our river the other day. Luckily our baby aligator chose a different home than the underneath of our dock.


Don hat seine Kopfgrippe an mich weitergegeben. Zum Glueck packte ich meine Sachen schon vor einer Woche in den RV und muss mich mir jetzt keine Sorgen machen, dass ich was vergesse. Waere sehr gut moeglich, da mein Kopf momentan zu nichts zu gebrauchen ist. Ich sitze auf dem Sofa und trompete wie ein Elch, waehrenddem ich versuche, diesen "blog" zu lernen.

Heute gehen wir einkaufen fuer die Reise und wir werden meinen Kiwi Baum zu Joanne's Platz bringen, damit er hoffentlich ein wenig Wasser abbekommt vom Sprinklersystem. Es ist sehr heiss in Florida and ich verstehe, warum man niemanden draussen sieht. Obwohl die Besucher von einem Nachbarn gestern in unserem Fluss gebadet haben. Sie sind entweder sehr mutig oder haben ein wenig zu viel von den kleinen Pfeifen geraucht, die meine Nachbarin in meinem Kiln gebacken hat.
